In 1931, the Santa Maria Club started a “Stag Barbecue,” which was held on the second Wednesday of every month, with up to 700 patrons attending each event. By the late 1950s, three local restaurants—The Far Western Tavern, Hitching Post, and Jocko’s were on their way to becoming landmarks of this style of barbecue. The Elks Lodge #1538 has huge indoor BBQ pits, and host what is called ‘Cook Your Own’ (CYO) every Friday evening. The original cut was top sirloin. Then, as today, the meat was rolled in a mixture of salt, pepper, and garlic salt before being barbecued over the red oak coals, which contribute a smoky, hearty flavor.…

Panda Inn – Horton Plaza
In the beginning I remember old seedy movie theaters on this spot of land. They were demolished to make way for Horton Plaza. I liked the bright pastels and the design was like something out of an Escher artwork. It’s easy to get lost in Horton Plaza. I avoid losing my car here by parking in the same spot. Now the pastels have faded and the shadows grimier. Nordstroms is gone. The lovely Hawaiian jewelry of Na Hoku is no more. Panda Inn closes January 31. Mall is becoming a barren ghost town.

Barbusa – Yelp elite event
I was intrigued when I the Yelp event flier arrived and whole fish was mentioned. I have loved fish since I was a little kid and my parents bought fresh fish at Woo Chee Chong. My favorite was the seabass steamed with ginger and soy sauce. Normally there would be a big line outside before the event but this cold winter night we all huddled together right inside.

I’ll have to admit I was a tiny bit apprehensive about eating here as I was not sure what to expect. Pretty much standard fast food set up with the theme decoration color, Red. ❤️ It’s a fitting color as the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Bear Buns
Bear Buns has an old fashioned feel except for all the people with laptops using the wi fi. Selection was on the small side and it wasn’t busy. I ignored these warning signs and ordered a few items to try.
