Porto’s Bakery & Cafe – Burbank
Picture a golden potato ball glinting in the sun while fresh fried scent of potato fills your nostrils.

Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab – San Luis Obispo
When I was a kid I really looked forward to other kid’s birthday parties. Sometimes they had them at Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlours. That was the only time I’d get to go and have ice cream and candy there. Each birthday was spectacular. Typically 2 employees would bring out a huge sundae for everyone to share in. It was the fanciest I’d seen. There were bananas, whipped cream, sprinkles, and cherries. Doc Bernstein has a vibe like Farrell’s.

Del Mar Fair – Day 2
I started day 2 of my Del Mar Fair adventure at Reno’s Fish & Chips. You can read about Day 1 here. This time I went with my old favorite fried cod and zucchini.

Del Mar Fair – Day 1
This year I visited the fair twice to see as much as I could and still have a relaxing visit. Also I wanted to try more food than I could eat in one day. You can read about Day 2 here. I started with lunch at Reno’s Fish & Chips where I ordered fried catfish and zucchini.

Imperial Mandarin
I can’t stay away from this place. So many tasty items on the menu. Steamed cha siu bao is what I long for the most. Chunks of bbq pork with sweet notes and 5 spice powder flavor surrounded by a slightly sweet pastry combine into something incredibly delicious. You can only get them for lunch. On weekends they bring them along on shiny dim sum carts.

The Swiss Restaurant + Bar – Santa Maria
I love the small town feel to Santa Maria. Staying at Herb’s airbnb 1920’s Craftsman bungalow accentuated that feeling. When I was in elementary school I had friends who lived in classic Craftsman houses and I wanted to live in one ever since. There is a sense of history living in a structure that has been standing for almost 100 years. Looking around the home you can see the quality construction.

An’s Dry Cleaning
I remember peering at industrial cleaning machines sometime after my birth. At the time my family ran a dry cleaning business. It was bigger than An’s.

SoCal Night Market @ Madison High School
Note: This is one of our joint posts with both writers, so enjoy! This first portion is written by myself Maggie. The cannoli’s were by far the highlight of my evening.
