San Diego County Fair

This year we visted the fair on opening day.  We parked at Torrey Pines High School and took the free bus.  The wait was only a few minutes.  It was pretty quiet at the fair with no line to get in at 11:30am.

They were still getting the flowers out at the flower exhibition.  Food lines were very short.

I looked for my favorite fish and chip vendor Reno’s Fish and Chips.  They were nowhere to be found and I verified with the people at the information booth that Reno’s is not at the fair this year.  I did see they have San Diego’s Original Fish & Chips.  I tried them last year and they are not very good.

I tried the pan fried chicken at Dee’s.  It was $13 for 2 pieces.

Loved the crunchy skin and flavor.  Not as juicy as the chicken at Popeyes.  Dinner roll was soft and fluffy.  I liked the fresh mild flavor.

I noticed they have a fry bread vendor and was excited to try it.  I loved the fry bread I had on our Monument Valley trip.

I ordered the fry bread with cinnamon sugar.  Fresh out of the fryer the outside was a little crispy while the inside was a bit like a funnel cake.  Loved the fresh fried flavor with the sweetness from the sugar.  This was my favorite treat of the day.

Sadly the bbq is out of my price range.  This year it was $85 for a rack of ribs.

Lots of other food choices with colorful booths.

While looking at the student artwork I noticed a Pepsi machine.
What interested me was there was lime Bubly available for $1.50.  Best drink deal I’ve seen.  I loved the cold refreshing lime flavor.

We have a yearly tradition to take home a souvenir.

This is the plant Maggie picked out from the plant vendor.

We had a great time at the fair listening to the free music and looking at the student and amateur photography plus the garden area.

  1. Going on opening day of the fair is a great idea to avoid the crowds! My new plant (ponytail palm) is very happy so far.

    1. Cool new plant you picked!

  2. I have a *very* similar photo of the guys playing and singing on that stage! Just realized that wasn’t Reno Fish and chips, but The Mister did order the squid and chips at San Diego’s Finest while I walked over to Chicken Charlies and ordered cole slaw; later we ordered fry bread! We will go back in a few weeks to try more. You got some great photos!

  3. That’s great you saw the guys too! How did you like the fry bread? Glad you liked the photos!

  4. Very nice photos! Getting the bus from one of the local lots and going on a weekday definitely helps save some money and you can enjoy everything with fewer people around.

    1. Thanks! I think we will visit opening day next year. We like it quiet and don’t like long lines.
