San Diego County Fair

The day started at Torrey Pines High School where they had free parking and a free ride to the fair.  In the past they had the cool double decker buses as seen in Harry Potter.  Turns out the company that supplied the double decker buses went out of business so now it’s school buses with tinted windows.

Our first stop of the day was to try the cinnamon roll stand we saw featured on news 8.
Pastry part was soft and full of sweet cinnamon flavor.  Icing added more sugary flavor and the bacon added a crunchy texture and savory flavor.  Decadent and delicious.  To add more sweetness to our meal we also had a lemonade.  Nice mix of sweet and sour flavor.  Very refreshing.

For lunch I searched for Reno’s Fish and Chips.  Sadly Reno’s was nowhere to be found.  I tried another fish and chip stand.

I ordered the fish and fried zucchini.  The zucchini wasn’t fried properly.  The batter wasn’t crunchy.  Instead it was kinda gummy.  Removing the batter seemed the best course of action.  The zucchini was good.

Batter on the fish was nice and crunchy.  I enjoyed the fried flavor of the batter and the mild cod.  Texture of the fish was mostly delicate and flaky.  There was a hard bit or two.  I suspect the fish was frozen and defrosted.

I was interested in getting bbq beef ribs till I saw the price.  $74 for a full rack.  While I enjoy bbq ribs I can get a prime dry aged ribeye steak for that price at my favorite steakhouse.  I’m opting for the ribeye steak.

We spent most of our time checking out the flower and garden exhibits.  I love looking at the lovely flowers and taking in the unique scent of each one.

Afterwards Maggie found some tea plants she had to have.

We had a great time at the fair but I noticed the flower and garden display was smaller.  There were fewer food vendors and the prices much higher.
Cathy of mmm-yoso has visited the fair too.

  1. Great pictures! The flowers are always my favorite stop!

    1. The flowers were lovely.

  2. Whoa! I took photos of the food booths on June 6 and 7 and the prices were different-the booths had come from the LACounty Fair, which was in May this year. $76 is crazy for anything at a County Fair. It looks like fun, but yes, smaller…baby steps to get back to ‘normal’.

    1. I’m hoping the food prices are lower next year.

  3. Ohhhh love Fair Food ! I haven’t been in ages due to prices and parking. The cinnamon roll looks good – was it served warm ? You should try the cinnamon dough rolls at Fresh Brothers – they make them fresh to order and we’ve always loved them. I cannot believe a rack of ribs is $74. Is that for pork ribs? I could maybe understand price if that was price for beef ribs but not for pork. Glad you had a wonderful time there. The weather has been so hot and humid lately so hopefully there was plenty of shade at the Fair when you visited.

    1. You should try the free parking. You can get free tickets. I usually do. The cinnamon roll seemed to be room temperature.

Thanks for the tip! You mean the sweet knots at Fresh Brothers?

It’s $74 for a rack of beef ribs.

It was about 70F when we went to the fair. We were mostly in the plant area which was cool. You should move by the beach. It’s not hot yet over here.

Give the fair another try. It is still great fun.

  4. Non properly fried zucchini is a food crime. I’m glad that at least the fish didn’t suffer the same fate. As expected the prices are outrageous. I also notice that places are no longer rounding up to the half dollar or full dollar quite as much post-pandemic (e.g. $20.23 or $9.66 instead of $20.49 or $9.99). Seeing that at a lot of fast-casual places in particular.

    1. It’s strange all they sell is fried food and they messed up frying the zucchini. I miss the old days.
