El Barbecue

I sail my memories of home,
Like boats across the Seine.
And watch my father’s eyes
Watching the setting sun
Set in my father’s eyes again
This Mortal Coil – My Father

I have been to this spot many times in the past.  There was another bbq joint named Sonny’s BBQ here back in 2014.  They had some great bbq and fried food.

I pulled into the parking lot and saw smokers burning white oak filling the air with the delicious scent of bbq.

White oak

I was surprised when I noticed one of the owners smoking various meats.

Brandon remembered taking my orders back when he worked at Grand Ole BBQ Y Asado.

Nice to see Brandon is doing well and is the owner of a bbq joint with Ami.

El Barbecue opens at 10am for breakfast and lunch starts at 11:30am.  Sadly ribs weren’t ready at 11:30am so I tried the pulled pork instead.  Pork was tender and had a nice smoky flavor.  Reminds me of the pulled pork from Grand Ole.

2nd visit.  Beef brisket was tender and juicy.  Bark was bursting with smokiness from the white oak.  Loved the dry rub which was heavy with black peppercorns.

Beef ribs were juicy and tender with that same delicious dry rub.  So far the beef ribs are my favorite dish here with the beef brisket 2nd.  I also tried the bbq sauce.  They make it themselves and I liked the sweet flavor but their beef dishes have so much flavor from the dry rub I prefer not using the sauce.  Sadly these great dishes are only available from 6-9pm on Saturday.

3rd visit.  Full rack of pork ribs.  Ribs were coated in a delicious dry rub.  Combination of pepper and brown sugar gave the ribs elements of sweet and spice.  Meat had a nice smoky flavor from the white oak.  Loved how the meat was tender and juicy.

Apple pie was filled with thin slice of apple which made for a dense pie full of apple flavor.  Very unlike a supermarket pie filled full of sugar.  Additional flavors came from the pieces of walnut which helped form the top crust.  Crust was crunchy and had a buttery flavor.  This is a great tasting pie.  The baker deserves a bakery case to show off their creations.

El Barbecue has some great tasting bbq and the owners were very nice.  Atmosphere is relaxed as they don’t have huge lines for food here like at Grand Ole BBQ.
Outside I watch the sun set over downtown San Diego.  I remember the 4 brief years I had with my father walking down the city streets.  The skyline was much different in those days.  Far fewer skyscrapers.  On the plus side the food is much improved now.

    1. You should try El Barbecue. The flavors are much like Grand Ole.

  3. This sounds like the kind of BBQ we would like! Smoked meat is what we look for-not sauces. Yes, we have passed this building many times…now must stop.
