The Original Sab-E-Lee

I remember visiting Sab-E-Lee at it’s original location and there were 2 small tables.

This new location is very fancy.

Won ton soup with egg noodles and duck as $15.99.  You get 3 won tons, duck off the bone, and a good amount of bok choy.  Loved the flavor of the chicken broth which also had some roast duck flavor.  Won tons had a delicious thin won ton wrapper and filling of mostly pork.  Roast duck was full of 5 spice powder flavor.  Bok choy was fresh and crunchy with sweet bok choy flavor.  This is one of my favorite bowls of won ton soup.
When I ordered a combo fried rice I was asked what spice level I wanted.  I asked for zero.  That was probably a mistake.  Fried rice had a very mild flavor and didn’t appear to have salt or soy sauce added to it.  The chicken and the pork seemed a bit dry.  Shrimp was plump and had a nice flavor.  Sadly I only found two of them.  I suspect I’d like this dish better at a spice level of 1 or 2.  My favorite spot for fried rice remains OB Noodle House.

Next I tried the won ton soup.  For $10.99 you get around 7 won tons.
I liked the flavor of the pork won tons and the thin won ton wrapper.  In the broth I found baby bok choy, napa cabbage, celery, and mushrooms.  Most places fill you up with noodles but they do it here with veggies.  Broth was well seasoned and tasty.
Garlic wings were fried in a little bit of crunchy batter.  I loved the contrast of the crispy outside and the tender juicy meat.  Too much garlic flavor for me though.  I was hoping there would be garlic flecks I could remove but the garlic soaked into the batter/skin.

So far I loved the won ton soup with egg noodles and duck.  The other dishes I tried are ok.

  1. That’s great they have a new location! The curry choices look appealing.

    1. You will have to go with me next time!

  2. Definitely the end of an era. I remember when they opened this shiny new location and the original spot became Thai Papaya. Now both are gone. Last visit a few months ago the food was bland and a spicy level of 8 had the heat factor of water. It wasn’t at the level of years gone by, and it became increasingly more Americanized along the way. Hopefully the new business/owners do well in this next chapter.

    1. Hope the new place has the same awesome duck won ton soup. I was told they are keeping the recipes and chefs so I’ll see.
