Mid-autumn Festival 2021

Mid-autumn Festival 2021 is on September 21.  My family has celebrated for generations with mooncakes and watching the moon.

This year I visited the 99 Ranch Market on Balboa Ave to get mooncakes.
The selection was pretty good.  I noticed they had Wing Wah mooncakes.
Wing Wah makes my favorite mooncakes.
I’ve tried other brands but none taste as good to me as Wing Wah mooncakes.  I always get the white lotus seed paste without egg yolk.  Love the mix of flavors from the thin outer pastry layer and the smooth, sweet flavor of the white lotus seed paste.
99 Ranch is one of my go to markets and I’ve purchased a lot of items here.  One of my favorite areas is the produce section.
When in season they have yellow watermelon.
Flavor is sweet and a bit milder than the more common red ones.
They have lychee which is available around the same time cherries are.  I love the unique, bold sweet flavor.
There is also a Chinese bbq section where I tried the roast duck.  Roast duck had kinda crispy skin and good flavor.  Sadly the flavors were mostly skin deep and didn’t really seep into the meat.  Meat itself had a very mild flavor.  I prefer Sam Woo duck at the Clairemont Mesa Blvd 99 Ranch.

  1. I’m going to go get my mooncakes tomorrow and will look specifically for the Wing Wah ones!

  2. Cool! I’d get the ones without egg yolk unless you like the flavor of the preserved egg.
