Black Angus – El Cajon

In the days of my youth there were many more darkened steakhouses.  They are now a dying breed.  Black Angus has closed their Mira Mesa, Clairemont, and Friars Rd locations.  Their El Cajon location is now the closest.  We went to try it out as they are now open for dine in.

Reservations only.  We showed up at 3pm and they snuck us in.   As in the other locations there are no windows and it’s dim compared to daylight. I find the darkened interior relaxing.

Booths are comfy.

The soda water is free.

Meal starts with complimentary bread service.  Molasses bread had a crunchy crust and soft insides.   Delicious flavor with a bit of sweetness.

Baked potato soup with bacon and chives.  Delicious mix of flavors from the thick creamy soup, chunks of baked potatoes, chives and bacon.  I particularly loved the bacon which was bursting with savory flavor.  This is my favorite baked potato soup.

16oz ribeye steak was cooked medium well as requested.  Fairly tender and delicious flavor from the light char, salt, and pepper.  My favorite steak at the $36 price point.  More tender and flavorful than Superior Soul Food but not as tender as Rei Do Gado.

Mud pie was a decadent dessert.  Bottom crust was crunchy Oreo cookies.  Mocha ice cream center was creamy and full of mocha flavor.  Fudge topping was rich and chocolaty.  Excellent ending to our meal.

Service was excellent from the friendly wait staff.  As at the other Black Angus’s I visited I thoroughly enjoyed eating here.  When we left there was a big line outside.  Hope this place stays in business.  There are few Black Angus locations left.  While I can find a better steak I haven’t found better baked potato soup.

Driving home past Santee.

  1. Black Angus – an oldie but a goodie! I think the one in west Chula Vista is still kicking. I guess there’s not much other steakhouse competition in the area.

    1. I’ll have to try that one. I have been wanting to revisit the Nature Center. Can go afterwards.

  2. I’m glad they seated us pretty quickly even though we did not have reservations! Hopefully this location will stay open.

  3. It was nice we had a short wait. 🙂
