Pan de muerto @ Northgate Market

Pan de muerto
It is a sweetened soft bread shaped like a bun, often decorated with bone-shaped phalange pieces. Pan de muerto is eaten on Día de Muertos, at the gravesite or alternatively, at a tribute called an ofrenda. In some regions, it is eaten for months before the official celebration of Dia de Muertos.

The week before Dia de Muertos I hunt for pan de muerto.  I start my search in Mexican bakeries and grocery stores.  I found some at Northgate Market.

I noticed the display at the front of the store had different varieties of Pan de Muerto but the one with the sugar crystals is my favorite.
Pan de Muerto is fresh and fluffy.
Sugar sprinkles give the bread a bit of sweetness and there is a light anise flavor.  Great tasting pastry.
I like to celebrate Dia de Muertos by watching one of my favorite episodes of Babylon 5: Day of the Dead while eating some pan de muerto.  Once every 200 years, a comet approaches the Brakiri homeworld and signals the Day of the Dead, in which, for one night, people can interact with those who’ve died.
When the long night comes, return to the end of the beginning.
