Cowboy Star

Each time we drive to Cowboy Star I glance out the window to see how the first place I lived is doing.  It’s still standing.  I wonder how much longer it will last before it’s demolished and replaced by a 20 story condo tower.  Downtown San Diego is constantly changing.

Cowboy Star was recently closed for months for remodeling.
Remodeled dining counter.

Watch the chefs cook.

Place looks fancier than ever.

Bread service consisted of 4 freshly baked Parkerhouse rolls.  Lightly glazed with butter and salt crystals  the flavors were delicious.  I’ve tried these rolls from the supermarket but they lacked the flavor of these fresh out of the oven rolls.

8 oz wagyu skirt steak from Snake River Farms was cooked medium and one of the most tender steaks I’ve eaten.  Seasoned with salt, pepper, and butter the flavor was delicious.
French fries were crispy on the outside with a fluffy inside.  Loved the salty flavor.  These fries had a much richer potato flavor than your normal fast food fry.  Very cool how the fries are served in a napkin.  I keep them covered till I want to eat one thus they stay hot through the meal.
Creme brûlée had a crunchy top with fresh berries.  Loved the mix of flavors with the slight tartness of berries and the sweet creme.
Our waiter brought out for my birthday a scoop of orange ice cream with a topping of crumble.  Rich, creamy, and I loved the orange flavor.  Wish they sold pints as this is the best orange ice cream I’ve tasted.
On a previous visit I tried the 18 oz t-bone steak was huge and I barely finished it.  Prime Niman Ranch beef was aged for 21 days and was the most tender and delicious t-bone steak I’ve had.  I loved the simple preparation with salt, pepper, and butter.  French fries were full of potato flavor and lightly seasoned with salt.  Taste great.  I also enjoyed the fresh flavor of the butternut squash.
Cowboy Star is one of my favorite spots to go when I want an awesome steak.  Staff was nice, attentive, and provided answers to all my menu questions.  Manager checked to see how we were doing.
Booths were very comfortable.

  1. Glad you enjoyed your birthday dinner before they had to close this month. Their Riesling wine is very good.

    1. The steak was awesome! 🙂

  2. Happy birthday soo! What an awesome dinner. Friend has been wanting to take me here as he said their wagyu skirt steak (?) was best in town. But everytime he looked the restaurant was still in re model. Did you think the dishes were worth the higher prices? You must have eaten here before the city shut down dine-in service?

    1. Thanks Faye! 🙂 I celebrated my birthday early. Good thing as you can only get takeout and many places are closed now.

I think the prices are reasonable for what you get. Cowboy Star for me is one of those special occasion spots where I’m willing to splurge a few times a year for the best. For a place you could afford to eat at every weekend Cowboy Star is out and I’d say go to Minh Ky but you won’t be eating wagyu skirt steak there.
