Patisserie Melanie

This part of town holds many memories for me.  When I was a kid my mom took me across the street to visit her friend who lived in an apartment overlooking Park Blvd.  That’s how I found out about Comic Kingdom which was a few blocks away.  I biked over from North Park when I needed a comic fix.  Comic Kingdom closed in the 70’s and On Comic Ground opened in its place.  On Comic Ground closed in 2018.  Across the street was one of my favorite Chinese restaurants.  Further up Park Blvd was one of my favorite eateries Gulf Coast Grill.  I still miss their fried chicken and bbq ribs.

Recently my Yelp friends Omar S. and Joy B. told me about Patisserie Melanie on Park Blvd.  I drove over on a Saturday morning to check it out.  Luckily there was one parking spot open on a side street.
I walked over and found Patisserie Melanie in a very modern looking live-work tower.  Inside was a nice gentleman who I think was one of the owners.
Service was quite personalized as we were the only ones there.
This was a different experience than what I’m used to at bakeries like 85C which are full of treats and smiling teenagers behind the counter trying to get you out quick so they can take money from the customers behind you.  We chatted a bit about the new location Patisserie Melanie is opening next year.  I will miss the personalized service but I hope they get a parking lot.
The treats I tried:
1

Cinnamon-Cardamom Kouign-Amann had a crunchy crust with layers of buttery and cinnamon goodness inside.

I visited around 9am and ate everything right away.  There was fresh baked buttery aroma from each treat and rich buttery flavor.  My favorite was the Cinnamon-Cardamom Kouign-Amann.  I loved the interplay between the crunchy and delicate textures as well as the butter and cinnamon flavors.  Chef Melanie has some amazing creations and Patisserie Melanie is now one of my favorite bakeries.

  1. Great pictures! Now I’m hungry!

    1. Thanks! You would love the chocolate croissant.

  2. Would this place be worth the extra drive if you’re not in area? I’ve never tried a Kouign-Amann. Looks so good. Esp the cinnamon sugar.

    1. I drove 30 miles round trip so I would say it’s worth a 30 mile drive to try this place out. I wanted to visit to document their humble beginnings. Their treats taste great so I think they are gonna get crazy busy when they get their big location.
