    Sister Pee Wee

    November 14, 2017 /

I was watching the news and was thrilled to see Sister Pee Wee was being honored with Sister Pee Wee day on October 28 2017 by the Mayor and Larry Himmel Foundation. http://www.cbs8.com/story/36708968/community-gathers-to-celebrate-beloved-soul-food-restaurateur-sister-pee-wee   I went to search for more information and found Sister Pee Wee had closed on October 6th.  She had a good run for 63 years but her health was failing.     I met her for the 1st time in 2014 and reviewed her on Yelp.  There is a funny story about that meeting.  She was standing in front of me telling me about the menu options and I snapped a photo of her. Since then when I…

Garden Isle Barbecue & Chinese Restaurant

    November 3, 2017 /

I wanted to try the Chinese food on Kauai and found Garden Isle Barbecue & Chinese Restaurant.  Place reminds me of old Chinese restaurants back in San Diego.  Decor is plain and the prices under $20 with most dinners around $14.

“And there was this toy, this snowstorm ball, with a tiny castle inside, except it was like a whole world, a world inside the ball… It was like a little glass bubble of somewhere else. I lifted it, starting a blizzard. I knew it wasn’t real snow, but I couldn’t understand how it fell so slowly. I figured inside the ball was some different sort of time. Slow time. …And inside there was only water.” Alan Moore – The Watchmen I started eating in this neighborhood about 20 years ago.  Huffman’s Bbq was my favorite spot to get fried chicken.  Sadly while the building looks much the same they sell…

    KFC

    May 5, 2017 /

When I was a kid I had a choice of Pioneer Chicken, Picnic N Chicken, and Kentucky Fried Chicken.  Pioneer Chicken had this crunchy and spicy chicken I loved when I wanted to be a rebel.  Picnic N Chicken was like KFC original recipe except I thought it had a smoother flavor and maybe fried in better quality oil.  Sadly KFC is the last of the big 3 left in town.  I tried the extra crispy version and while I like how crunchy it is the flavor is not as intense as original recipe.  Original recipe has more spices and flavor.  Chicken seems smaller now than when I was a…

    Back Home in Lahaina

    March 16, 2017 /

Air was a mix of fresh sea breeze and earthy scent of an ancient forest.  Summer’s heat was stifling but there was cool shade beneath the big banyan tree in Lahaina’s Banyan Tree Park.  It was an amazing tree with 16 trunks and the canopy covered most of the park providing shade and home for small birds. My kid and my girlfriend’s kid ran around like kids do and climbed on things and explored the area.  Years have past and the kids do less running and climbing but I still remember when they did under the banyan tree in Lahaina.  Since my first visit to Maui I have eaten at many Hawaiian places…

Road trip San Diego to San Francisco Day 4

    July 12, 2016 /

One of the things I really enjoy about San Francisco is the weather.  I like how sometimes it’s sunny and the clouds and fog suddenly roll in.
