Rutts Hawaiian Cafe

I noticed Rutts Hawaiian Cafe on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives and made a point to visit next time I was in Los Angeles.  So I was picking up my kid for a summer road trip to San Francisco and there was a Rutts Hawaiian Cafe nearby so we stopped in.  This isn’t the location that was on the show but I figured the food would be similar.

I ordered the kalbi ribs with rice and fruit.  Fruit was fresh and full of flavor.

Rice was moist and I liked the mild flavor.  Kalbi was a bit overcooked and not juicy.  I liked the flavor which had a hint of sweetness.  I’ve had much better kalbi at North Shore Plate Lunch.

Next time I’ll try the location featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives 12114 W Washington Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90066.  This place isn’t like McDonald’s where the food taste the same no matter which location you go to.

  1. Yup my sliders were under seasoned and kinda dry… My coleslaw helped as I added it to my sliders. Disappointing for sure.

  2. The original owner of Rutt’s, Ken Nakamaejo sold the name and restaurant back in the early “ought’s” Soo. I think the breakfasts are their specialty.

    1. Thanks for the info Kirk! I’ll try breakfast next time I’m up there.

  3. Would be interesting to know if the other location (the one that was on the show) fares better!

    1. I think it all depends on the chef. You need some skills to take the meat off the grill at the right moment.
