Apple Alley Bakery

Julian is renowned for apple pies.  In the old days there were enough Granny Smith apples to supply the local bakeries.  Now most of the apples are imported.  There are 3 main bakeries making pies.
This day I visit Apple Alley Bakery.
Mango and apple pie had a flaky, buttery crust with sweet apple and mango filling.  Granny smith apples and mango pieces were sweet and I thought the 2 went well together.
Apple crumb pie had a flaky, buttery crust with dense sweet apple filling.
Loved the crunchy and crumbly top which had a sweet cinnamon flavor.  This is one of the best pies I’ve eaten.  Many pies have filling pumped full of sugar and are too sweet but this pie was packed full of apples and had just the right amount of sweetness for me.
Oatmeal chocolate chip cookie was crumbly and much like an oatmeal cookie loaded with lots of chocolate chips.  Very sweet.  Interesting cookie but I prefer oatmeal raisin cookies.
Molasses cookie was soft and full of molasses flavor.  Very good tasting molasses cookie.
Oatmeal cookie was soft and full of oatmeal flavor.
Apple turnover appears to be made with pie crust.
I liked the crumbly texture and mild flavor.  Cinnamon sugar top added a bit of sweetness.  Apple filling was sweet but not so sweet the apple flavor was hidden.  Very tasty treat.
Peach pie is only available by ordering a day in advance.  There was a choice of the lattice crust or standard.  I chose standard.
Crust was crunchy with a mild pastry flavor.  Filling was dense packed full of peaches.  Loved the flavor which was full of peach flavor with sweetness but not too much.  One of the best peach pies I’ve eaten.

Young lady running the place was friendly and provided excellent service.  Apple Alley Bakery is one of my favorite spots for pie but I prefer the cookies at Mom’s.

  1. What a wonderful place to indulge your sweet tooth in! Think I’d go for the peanut butter cookie.

    1. You should get one tomorrow!

  2. I had no idea they imported apples to the bakeries – I always thought there would be enough apples in the orchards around there. I remember apple picking in the area several years ago during the season.

  3. The small might be able to get by with just local apples but Julian Pie Co is selling pies all over San Diego using up most of the supply.

  4. Wow this place looks fabulous! I’d love to try especially the apple pie!

    1. You should go next visit. Lots of places to hike up there.
