Mid-Autumn Festival 2020

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Lantern or Mooncake Festival, is celebrated notably by the Chinese and East Asian people. The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar with a full moon at night, corresponding to mid-September to early October of the Gregorian calendar.

On this day, the Chinese believe that the moon is at its brightest and fullest size, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of Autumn.

Mooncakes, a rich pastry typically filled with sweet-bean or lotus-seed paste, are traditionally eaten during the festival. Lanterns of all size and shapes, are carried and displayed – as beacons to light our way to prosperity and good luck.

This year the Mid-Autumn Festival is Thursday October 1.  I went to 99 Ranch to look for mooncakes.

I didn’t see my favorite mooncakes this year.  They had a very limited selection of Wing Wah mooncakes.  None of the white lotus seed paste ones.

I did find a brand I don’t think I’ve seen before.

Hong Kong MX Mooncakes

Hong Kong MX Mooncakes.  I gave them a try.  The pastry part was very similar.  The white lotus seed paste was close in flavor but I think the Wing Wah version had a more vivid delicious flavor.  I would get these again but I prefer the Wing Wah version.

In the days of my youth I would celebrate with my mom and my brother watching the moon and eating mooncakes from Woo Chee Chong.  These days it’s the moon and a mooncake from 99 Ranch.
