The Balboa Bar & Grill

When a world ends, there’s always something left over. A story, perhaps, or a vision, or a hope.
The Sandman – Neil Gaiman
I remember the first time I stepped from the light into the darkness.  Scent of beer and burgers was in the air.  The Balboa would become my favorite place in town to get a burger.

I usually got the Centennial burger.  2 beef patties and double bacon with lettuce and tomato.  It was an adventure each visit getting that huge burger in my mouth.  Somehow I was able to do it as I kept coming back for more.  More of that beef with just enough char to give it a burst of flavor but not enough to dry that fresh juicy beef.  More of that crispy bacon bursting with savory flavor.  More of that fresh lettuce and tomato balancing out the delicious meat flavors.
Burger with added piece of chicken.

Over the years I have brought my kid, my girlfriend and her kid, and friends from work.  We have had many great meals here.  With heavy heart I raise a glass to The Balboa which did not survive the apocalypse of 2020.  I will miss the mouth watering burgers.   I will miss the dim lit bar where we had great times.
Our hangout spot.
Cooking my burger.
Goodbye old friend.

  1. Perhaps someday they will return.

    1. I’ll be watching.

  2. I remember you posting about this place before? That is incredibly sad they didn’t make it. It’s hard to see these restaurants folding. I’m glad they were able to give you memories that will last a lifetime.

  3. Faye I did post about it a few years ago. You have a great memory! It appears they have a location in Chula Vista so I will have to check it out:
