Aldi – Mira Mesa

I remember when this land was dirt, shrubs, and a few rabbits.

While I was in junior high Mira Mesa Blvd ended at Parkdale and it was wilderness till you got to the 805 freeway.  I liked exploring the desolate wilderness.  After the rain there were vernal pools.  Now those primeval pools have been replaced by houses, malls, and office buildings.  This particular spot housed a Fresh and Easy for a time.

I watched as it was demolished and now there is an Aldi.

Aldi has some interesting cost cutting innovations.  You can barrow carts for inside use for a 25 cent deposit.  This eliminates the entry level cart boy position.  There are no grocery bags so the cashier doesn’t have to count how many bags you use and charge you.  Instead your groceries are placed in a shopping cart and you then step to the side and bag your own groceries if you brought a bag.
Ice cream section seems to be filled mostly with low priced options I have not seen before.  I was hoping for some high quality options like Trader Joe’s.
Barq’s Root Beer float tasted just like Barq’s Root Beer.
Nice sweet flavor with a bit of bite.
Delicious treat but the tube is small and I’d prefer it in a pint container as the tube seems a waste of packaging.
Cookie section was filled with brands I never heard of.  From the photos on the packages they seemed to be knock-offs of famous brands like Nabisco.
Soda water options seemed ok.
Clancy’s Cheese Curls were crunchy with very light cheesy flavor.  Cheetos are much more flavorful.  I would not buy these again.
Clancy BBQ Potato Chips were crunchy and had bbq flavor.  Quality is similar to store brand chips.  I prefer Lays but these chips were ok.
Southern Grove Dry Roasted Peanuts with Sea Salt look much like the Planters version.  Peanuts were crunchy with salty flavor like Planters.  I like the flavor of Planters version a bit more.
Southern Grove Honey Roasted Peanuts looks like the Planters version.  Peanuts were crunchy.  Seasoning had a sweet and salty flavor.  I didn’t like the flavor and wouldn’t get them again.
Aldi might be a bit cheaper than Vons or Ralphs but I’m use to the flavors of name brand foods.
The knockoffs I’ve tried here don’t taste as good to me.

I’ll be back for more frozen Barq’s Frozen Root Beer though.

  1. Well at least you found one thing you liked! I do miss the Fresh and Easy!

    1. I’ll try some more cheap knock offs next time I go to get more BarQ’s Root Beer Float!

  2. I’ve been wanting to try this place so thanks for the post.

Vons has an amazing sale on sweet ripe cherries right now Soo . Few days ago I bought $2.99/lb (from $5.99) and yesterday went down to like $1.37/lb I think.

    1. You are welcome!

I bought cherries at Vons for $2.99. I’ll visit again after I run out. Thanks for the tip!

  3. i stopped by but it doesn’t carry much stuff that i typically buy. the eggs were super cheap though, only 50 cents a dozen. sometimes the fruits or vegetables have low prices too. i’d probably go in if i were already in that plaza. my preferred is still sprouts or vons.

    1. I alternate between Costco, Vons, Sprouts, Stater Bros, Ranch 99, HMart, and Zion depending on where I am and what I need. I’ll stop by Aldi next time I’m near Aldi.
