Suckerfree Southern Plate & Bar

As I walked towards Suckerfree Southern Plate & Bar I recalled a few years ago there was a bbq joint here and across the street was a Hard Rock Cafe.  Suckerfree has a good size menu.

I chose the catfish and chips this visit.  Cornmeal batter had a nice crunch and delicious flavor while the catfish was tender, delicate, and full of sweet catfish flavor.  Been awhile since I had fried catfish this good.  Fries had a crispy outside and soft inside full of potato flavor.  Very tasty dish.
2nd visit.
I ordered half a fried chicken and added a $7 waffle.  Waffle had a bit a crunch on the outside and a nice mild flavor.  I added some powdered sugar and a bit of syrup.
Fried chicken had very crunchy batter with a nice combination of spices.  Not as juicy as Popeyes.  Overall this dish was good but Howlin’ Ray’s remains my favorite fried chicken and waffles spot.
3rd visit I started with the popcorn catfish.  Little catfish nuggets were coated in cornmeal batter which was very salty with either too much salt or msg.  I ate a few nuggets and I was starting to get a headache and I was getting a nasty flavor in my mouth.  Nice waitress took it off my bill and got me some chicken wings instead.  I was bummed out as the catfish was very good quality but ruined by too much salt/msg.
Fried chicken wings came naked.  They were perfectly fried with crispy skin and the chicken was tender and moist.  Hardly any flavor though.  I dipped the wings in bbq sauce and they were pretty good with the addition of the sweet and smoky flavored sauce.  Tasted like Sweet Baby Ray’s Honey BBQ Sauce which is one of my favorites.
Complimentary soda water.

I wanted to try the big beef rib but the waitress stated they were redoing the menu.  The staff is very nice here but I hope they taste test the batter for the popcorn catfish in the future.
Lots of beer available.
