Mid-Autumn Festival 2019
This year’s mid-autumn festival is September 13, 2019. I went to Ranch 99 and bought my mooncakes early before the best ones are gone. In bought a box of Wing Wah and another Hong Kong brand Saint Honore. Over the years I’ve tried different brands and Wing Wah mooncakes have been my favorite.
Saint Honore had white lotus seed only variety. I thought I’d give them a try. Pastry part was tender and had a nice mild flavor. White lotus seed filling was smooth and dense with a delicious sweet flavor. Great tasting mooncake which is very similar to the Wing Wah mooncakes.
I also visited Hmart and found Hongkong Specialty red bean paste mooncakes. Red bean paste had a very strong sweet flavor and I couldn’t taste much pastry flavor. I ate pure red bean paste straight out of the can when my mom made red bean paste sesame balls. It was an ok experience but I much prefer the mix of flavors you get from red bean paste sesame balls. I would not get red bean paste mooncakes again. From the label it appears these mooncakes were made in China.

I like to take photos of beautiful things like rain falling into puddles. Photos were mostly taken on a Fuji XE-2. Starting 9.9.2016 most photos are taken on a Fuji XT-2. Subsequent photos were taken with an Iphone 13 Pro and an Iphone 15 Pro Max.

Wow some of those are expensive ! I can’t believe you ate red bean outta a can when you were little. I’m not a fan of mooncakes but wondering if they taste better when heated? Like in the oven.

You can buy lower priced San Diego made mooncakes but I don’t like the flavor. I didn’t eat the entire can but I did eat the left overs when my mom was making sesame balls.
I never tried them heated. I like them out of the fridge and at room temp.
