Chicken Charlie’s FRYBQ

I’m a huge fan of Chicken Charlie’s facebook deal of the day.  Everyday there is a new special.  These are the dishes I’ve tried.

Fried chicken was crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside.  Very good flavor from the spices.  A bit like Popeyes.  This chicken is tastier but Popeyes is cheaper.

Chicken and waffles with a chicken wing and breast.  Chicken had crunchy batter and juicy inside with delicious flavor.  Waffle with powdered sugar was had a little crunch to it and very good flavor.  This is one of the better chicken and waffle dishes in town.  🙂
Bacon wrapped shrimp had a nice combination of flavors.  The shrimp was a bit overcooked and thus a bit dry.
Fried zucchini had an odd flavor I couldn’t place.  It distracted me from the delicious zucchini flavor which was hidden.  I wouldn’t get this dish again.
Rotissiere chicken was tender, juicy, and filled with delicious flavors from the dry rub.  It’s my fav rotisserie chicken in town.  I use to alternate between Costco and El Pollo Loco but this chicken has better flavor.
Onion rings were panko battered and had a nice fried onion flavor.  Bbq ribs were grilled and coated with a sweet and tangy bbq sauce.  There was a mild pork flavor hiding behind the bbq sauce.
White meat parts away from the bone were dry.  Comparable to other chain restaurants that are not rib joints.
Fried Twinkie had a unique delicious flavor.  In addition to the standard Twinkie flavor the frying process gave it an even better flavor.
Pupu wings had a crunchy batter and a heavy soy sauce flavor.  Chicken was tender and moist.  Next time I’d get the sauce on the side as I love the flavor of the plain fried chicken.
Fried shrimp had a delicious seasoned batter and were plump and juicy.  Fries had a nice potato flavor.
I look forward to visiting Chicken Charlie’s at the Del Mar Fair yearly and it’s an adventure trying the Facebook specials.  Wish they had fried Twinkies here all the time.

  1. Geez I’m getting hungry just looking at your pictures! Great informative post!

    1. Let’s get some fried chicken!

  2. Were all these meals specials of the day? Wow ! Awesome post. Never been here as I wasn’t a fan of their Fair food. The restaurant always looks empty – how’s business for them when you visited?

  3. Thanks! 🙂

The meals were all advertised on their facebook page. 🙂 It’s usually 15-20% full. I avoid going at noon and 5:30pm when I suspect they might be busy.

You should try them. The chicken dishes are excellent!
