White Rice

Eating at Liberty Station is an adventure.  You never know what restaurants will disappear or what will take its place.

White Rice recently opened and I tried the lechon kawali.

Egg was a mix of textures from the hard white and the gooey yolk.  Nice flavor.  Rice was mild flavored.  Could have used a bit more moisture as it was a bit hard.  Lechon kawali had a very crunchy layer of skin, a soft fat layer and the bottom meat layer was a bit dry and crunchy.  I enjoyed the fried flavor but I would prefer less frying time and a more juicy pork.  Good lunch size bowl but for dinner I’d order something to go with it.

I visited after lunch.  The staff was nice and my order came out quick.  For a place named White Rice I wasn’t wowed by the rice.

  1. That’s a bummer about the rice. Do you think you’d try them again?

    1. It’s unlikely as The Latin Chef is near them and has delicious fried rice. https://www.hungryones.com/2020/05/the-latin-chef/

  2. Hopefully they will improve their rice game. This place is by a San Diego/National City native – Phillip Esteban – and he’ll be opening up another eatery in the new National City food hall soon.

  3. How do you like Phillip’s cooking? It seems the recipe is good but the quality control needs work.

  4. Yes that’s exactly right – he strikes me a bit like Roy Choi wanting to deliver good eats at affordable prices to the community but when you’re operating out of these stalls and the rent is (undoubtedly) still so high I am sure they cut corners.

    1. Howlin’ Ray’s is awesome!
