Golden Island

1st visit right before the lockdown:  I noticed a under new management sign outside.  Inside the place looked the same.  Not many people inside for lunch.  Seems like Chinese restaurants have been fairly quiet lately.  I had my favorite dishes.

Har gow had a mild tasting wrapper with a delicious shrimp filling.

Siu Mei had a delicious shrimp and pork filling.

Sticky rice

Sticky rice had some good tasting rice and pork but I didn’t like the preserved egg.

Baked char siu boa had a sweet pastry outside and delicious slices of char siu inside.  One of my favorite dishes here.

Sesame balls had a sweet pastry outside and an even sweeter bean paste filling.

Won ton soup had won tons with a shrimp and pork filling.  Soup had a very strong flavor which I didn’t like.

Sweet rice cakes had a nice sweet rice flavor.

2nd visit.  Manager was taking takeout orders at the hostess desk.  I put in my order and he told me to come back in 15 -20 minutes.  I came back in 15 minutes and was told my order wasn’t ready yet.  After a few minutes this guy in a baseball cap started complaining he had waited 15 minutes and his order wasn’t ready yet.

Manager:  checked and told the baseball cap dude his order would be ready in 10 more minutes.

Baseball cap dude:  told everybody he had important things to do as it was Sunday morning during the apocalypse.

Baseball cap dude:  insisted Manager have cook cook faster.

Manager:  went to the kitchen to have the cook cook faster.

As I got my order I noticed baseball cap dude was still waiting.  He was wise insisting the cooks cook faster.  Everybody knows cooks usually slack off and are always on cigarette breaks in the back unless someone tells them to cook faster.  I’m sure baseball cap dude got his food faster and the cook might add something special to his order.

Pan fried noodles
Sauce, bbq pork, bok choy

Bbq pork pan fried noodles came in 2 containers.  One held the crispy egg noodles while the other held the sauce, bbq pork, bok choy, mushroom, and carrots.  Smart move to keep the noodles from getting soggy.  Crispy egg noodles had a delicious egg flavor which was enhanced by the savory brown sauce.  Bbq pork was tender and had a rich 5 spice powder flavor.  Great tasting dish.

Sticky rice was moist and sticky with delicious flavor.

Golden Island has many great tasting dishes.  Taste much like Fung Fung Yuen which is what this place was called after taking over the building after Hometown Buffet closed.  I talked to the manager and he assured me the chef from Fung Fung Yuen was retained.

Haha! Love your post! I wonder if baseball cap dude is still waiting? I know how much I appreciate being told to do my job faster by people doing nothing. I will have to give their pan fried noodles a try!

    1. Thanks Kathy! I’m sure the chef worked extra fast to get him out. They make very good tasting dim sum too. 🙂

  3. I’ve been wondering how this place was doing since the change of management! I’ve been getting dim sum right next door at the Hong Kong cafe. The dumplings and sticky rice look good. I thought they would be open for dine in by now though?

    1. Faye! According to their website you can reserve a table. When I visited last month they were just doing takeout. Food taste just like Fung Fung Yueng which I liked.
