Barrio Donas

I loved visiting Tijuana when I was a kid.  Mexican bakeries were easy to find and the scent of fresh baked goodness wafted into the streets.  Inside you grabbed a big aluminum tray and a pair of thongs.  Racks of fresh baked goodies waited for you to choose from.  I always picked a concha.
Barrio Donas opened in 2019 and has a new and shiny look and feel.  Very different from the old school bakeries like Panchitas I usually go to.

Selection is a mixture of classic donuts and concha’s with some fusion style donuts as well as hot food.
Apple fritter
Apple fritter had a crunchy sweet glaze with lots of apple bits giving this treat a delicious apple flavor.  Lots of places overdo it with the sugar but this apple fritter had a nice balance between the sweetness and the apple flavor.
Vanilla concha had a light sweet vanilla flavor.  Texture like a roll.  Reminds of Panchitas Bakery concha’s except they don’t have the vanilla flavor.
Cinnamon sugar donut was fresh and had a mix of sugar and cinnamon flavor.  Very good sugar donut.
Churro donut was crunchy on the outside and had flavor just like a churro.  Center was soft like a donut and had donut dough flavor.  Very interesting donut with some churro qualities.
Apple empanada
Apple empanada was a bit like an apple turnover.  Sweet apple filling tasted like many apple turnovers I’ve had.  The dough part had a very mild flavor which didn’t add anything to this treat.  Much prefer a good apple turnover.
Cinnamon roll had bold sweet flavor like from a glazed donut with the addition of a strong cinnamon flavor.  Very good tasting cinnamon roll.
Staff was nice and kept the line moving quickly.  I’ve enjoyed most of the treats I’ve tried at Barrio Donas.  It’s among the better donut shops I’ve tried.  Freshness of their products is only surpassed by Krispy Kreme and Sidecar Doughnuts
Kirk of mmm-yoso!!!  has visited too.

    1. It was a good apple fritter!

  2. OH man ! These all look so good. Is this location by Little Sheep? I want to visit when the items are right outta the fryer/oven!! Did you eat any of these the next day – did it still taste ok?

    1. It is near Little Sheep. I went in the morning and ate them as soon as I got home so everything tasted fresh. I generally am not impressed by day old donuts so I would just buy enough for breakfast.
