Doc Burnstein’s Silk Fudge / Southern California + fudge giveaway

*Another lovely joint post! Below portion is written by Maggie.*

The first time I tasted fudge I was hooked. Watched them make it from an outside window at Seaport Village. They poured the hot mixture on a table to cool, and kept mixing it with a long metal instrument. Just couldn’t get over how different it tasted from a plain chocolate bar.

Ever since that day I’ve held that memory of how the fudge tasted and compared it to each experience I’ve had since. Nobody could come close to the taste or texture of that fudge. It seemed everyone had their own idea of how fudge should taste and I was sorely disappointed.

Years later, I took of tour of Doc Burnstein’s and had my first sample of motor oil fudge! My taste buds delighted in the complex layers of fudge flavor and I knew this was the one. :>) Greg our gracious tour guide and owner, told us the story of how he found the lady who makes this fudge and how closely she holds the secret recipe. I don’t blame her, I would too. This stuff is legendary.

We sampled eight different types of fudge, below are my thoughts.

Almond Coconut Love

Coconut Almond Love… Reminds me of an almond joy bar! Fresh crunchy almonds, moist coconut surrounded by creamy fudge.

Doc’s Java

Doc’s Java… Creamy coffee smooth melt in your mouth explosion of flavor!! Tastes a bit like Kona coffee.

Milk Chocolate

Milk Chocolate… Mild milk chocolate with notes of caramel tastes a bit like a milk dud.

Birthday Cake

Birthday Cake…..Super sweet explosion of birthday cake frosting flavor, spot on. Not my favorite, too strong too sweet for me. I’m sure this is a hit with kids.

Toasted Almond

Toasted Almond…Rich fudge flavor with crunchy toasted almonds on top! Favorite so far!

Motor Oil

Motor Oil….The perfect fudge, the best I’ve had ever! Deep fudge flavor with layers of Kahlua, dark coffee and vanilla.

Peanut Butter Cup

Peanut Butter Cup….Mild milk chocolate flavor on top, thin layer of peanut butter in middle, fudge layer on bottom. All together mixes nicely for a superb peanut butter cup, tastes kinda like those peanut shaped cookies, nutter butters.

Oreo Mint

Oreo Mint…Tastes like a Girl Scout thin mint cookie surrounded by fudge. Love the pieces of cookie inside and the thin layer of Andes chocolate mint on top.

One of the things I remember about the County Fair is the brightly lit fudge booth.  There was a huge variety of fudge to choose from.  You could get a sample to try the various flavors.  Other than that once a year experience I don’t really see fresh fudge around.  I was excited to see Doc Burnstein’s has fresh fudge labelled SilkFudge.  I tried most of the flavors.

Almond coconut chocolate love has a rich milk chocolate almond and coconut flavors.  A bit like Almond Joy.  Really good.

Doc’s Java rich and full of java flavor.
Milk chocolate has a light chocolate flavor.  A bit like a Hershey’s kiss.

Birthday cake has intense birthday cake flavor.  Good in small quantities.
Toasted almond has delicious mix of fudge and almond flavor.
Motor Oil has a rich mocha flavor.  Very coffee like.
Peanut butter cup has delicious mix of milk + dark chocolate + peanut butter.  Like a Reece’s Peanut Butter Cup.
Oreo Mint taste like Thin Mint Cookie embedded in fudge.
All the varieties of fudge I tried had a rich, fresh homemade flavor.  The Almond Coconut Chocolate was my favorite as it had a lot of flavors I love.
Doc Burnstein’s wants a lucky hungryones.com reader to have a free box of fudge.  On November 25 a lucky reader will be picked and Doc Burnstein’s will mail a lucky winner a box of fudge anywhere in the U.S.  To enter post a comment or email your name and email address to soo@hungryones.com
