Pizza Port – Solana Beach

I remember the ice cold glass bottle.  The sweet bubbly root beer contained within.  12oz of the best tasting drink I’ve tasted.  Charles Elmer Hires introduced the first commercial brand of root beer in the year 1875.  He wanted to name the product “root tea,” he branded it as “root beer” to sell it among the coal miners of Pennsylvania.  Sadly Hires Root Beer has been discontinued in California for decades.   Over the years I’ve tried to find solace in other root beers.  I’ve tried Shasta root beer, the generic super market versions, A+W, Mug, and Barq’s which is my current favorite.  They aren’t as good as Hires.  I’ve gone cold turkey for a few years.

I was excited to see Pizza Port made their own root beer.  It had a sweet sarsaparilla flavor.  Sadly there wasn’t any bubbly goodness.  I can drink carbonated water with no sugar but I can’t drink sugar water with no carbonation.
I also tried the oven baked wings.  They were hot out of the oven tender and juicy.
Wings tasted like buffalo wings with a little spicy kick.  I dipped them in sweet bbq sauce to weaken the kick.  I’m not a fan of the flavor of buffalo wings.  I like my wings battered with southern style seasonings or salt and pepper style.
Staff was nice and it was relaxing sitting outside watching the world go by.

  1. Hmm, pizza and beer sounds good right now!

    1. You should get some!

  2. I enjoy reading the blog you and Maggie write. Have you tried Stubborn Soda root beer? I was wondering if it’s better than most.

    1. Thanks for reading Kathy! I have tried the Stubborn Root Beer. It is better than most. This place has a great selection:

They have this root beer I love:
      DEATH VALLEY ROOT BEER SODA

  3. BJs makes their own root beer (and it’s well-carbonated!).

    1. Thanks for the tip Sandy! How do you like BJ’s root beer?

  4. I haven’t been to BJs in a couple of years, but I remember it being very flavorful, almost sharp in taste.

If you go to Las Vegas, go to the Ellis Island steak restaurant in the casino. They too, brew their own root beer (or at least they used to).

I hope you sent back the root beer if it had no carbonation.

    1. Sandy,

Thanks for the tip! I’m going to Las Vegas next month. 🙂

      I’ll have to give BJ’s a try.

I didn’t send the root beer back. It was only $3 and I didn’t want anything else to drink.

  5. I’ve never been a baked wings kinda person. It doesn’t get as crispy. Have you tried any of their pizzas?

    1. Faye,

I don’t eat pizza. I was there mostly to try the root beer.
