San Diego Chinese Historical Museum

Long ago I rode on the shoulder of a giant.  Up high I saw things so differently than when close to the earth.  A moment in time that lives on in my memory.

Now a photo in the Chinese Laundry exhibit in this museum.  My parents had moved from China and that was the family business.

It was hard work.  Before dawn they would carry me to my crib in the laundry and work till dinner time Monday through Friday.

The Chinese laundries have mostly closed as the first generation has died and the kids went to college and found other careers.  There are many more photos and momentos.  Each has it’s own story to tell.

This museum is in the heart of what was Chinatown in San Diego.  Sadly the buildings the Chinese lived in have been torn down and the Chinese have spread all over town.  That is another story told with words and images here.

Founded in 1996 San Diego Chinese Historical Museum has grown to two buildings.
The original building houses the artifacts, permanent exhibits, garden, and koi pond.
Outside the 2nd building.

In 2004 a second building opened across the street where new exhibits appear.  San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is the place to learn about Chinese history in San Diego.

  1. That’s pretty darn cool to be part of the museum exhibit along with your brother! Perhaps they will add more pictures as the museum grows. Such a special memory for you, glad you got to share it. :>)

  2. I have been searching and searching on Google to find an image of a 19th century Chinese laundry ticket.

    Didn’t find one here.

    1. Good luck on your search! I have not seen a 19th century Chinese laundry ticket.
