Poli’ahu Heiau Wailua River State Park

The beautiful silence segues into the gentle breeze of the wind. Chirping birds fill this space with a sense of peace.

The Wailua Complex of Heiau is a National Historic Landmark since 1962. Consisting of Poli‘ahu Heiau, Hikinaakalä Heiau, Kalaeokamanu Heiau, and Malae Heiau. We were fortunate enough to visit Poli’ahu Heiau located within the Wailua River State Park established in 1954.

The views are stunning & the birds are unafraid of cars. If your in a pinch and cannot avoid a bird in the road, I found that tapping the horn scares them enough to fly away. I’d feel so horrible if we accidentally ran one over, which unfortunately we saw some that suffered that fate. Poor birdies. There are a few parking spots just off the main road.

The Opaekaa Falls view point is just a hop and skip down the road from this site. We were swarmed by gnats while we walked around but did not get bitten. I think they were plentiful due to the huge amounts of rain off and on during our visit. I’ll admit they were a bit scary at first but once I realized they really didn’t care about biting me then it was okay.

Informative signage depicting important Hawaiian history is abundant in this spot. I love to read about it.

  1. That was a cool historical site! Bummer we didn’t have any weapons to kill the gnats. I like how the rocks separate the vegetation.

    1. Yes it was! Now if we could just get the gnats to take a nap while we walk around!
