Hing Long Oriental Food Market

Back in the old days before San Diego’s first Chinese supermarket(Woo Chee Chong) opened we drove to Los Angeles every few months to stock up on Chinese groceries.  We visited small family run markets in Chinatown LA like this one.  At the entrance were exotic plants you won’t find at Home Depot.  The shelves were full of exotic foods.  There was a butcher in the back to cut your meat the way you want.  Produce section had a variety of Chinese vegetables.
 

One of my favorite things to buy at Woo Chee Chong were the melon cakes made by Great Eastern Bakery in San Francisco.  The mung bean hopia by Huy Ky Bakery is almost as good.
It’s nice there are still mom and pop supermarkets in the age of Walmart.  I buy stuff here instead of the chain stores when I’m in the area.  I appreciate there are vestiges of my childhood still standing.

    This was a delightful read, and pictures great as always. We have this kind of a market here in Chicago on Argyle street. This one had all kinds of exotic fruits ( like Duran fruit that I haven’t seen before. Great read, I cannot wait to see more photos, and read more from you guys

    I saw fresh lychee at Hmart Soo – they were pre packaged though but they were fresh. By the strawberry section (close to food court) –

        I went to Hmart and they don’t have lychee today. Produce guys didn’t know when they would get more.
